Academic document translation

If the PIO or another authority referred you to a sworn translator, you are in the right place. The Press and Information Office no longer issues translations, but it publishes the Register of Sworn Translators, where you can verify our entry under No. 094. You will see the terms sworn, certified or official translation. They mean the same thing.

When you need a sworn translation of an academic document

A sworn translation of academic documents is often required to begin or continue study at institutions abroad, for the recognition of qualifications, for registration with professional bodies or for participation in recruitment procedures.

Requirements differ depending on the educational institution or competent body where the documents will be submitted.

Apostille and legalisation

In some cases an Apostille or another form of legalisation of the document may be required before the sworn translation.

These requirements are set by the competent authority or the body where the document will be submitted, and they differ by country and by purpose of use.

Where your document carries an Apostille or another official legalisation, this is included in the sworn translation as well.

The correct order of steps

1. Obtain the original or a certified copy of the document from the educational institution.
2. Where the receiving body requires it, arrange the Apostille or other prescribed legalisation.
3. Send us your document so that you receive a quote and an estimated delivery time.
4. Under the guidance of the Council for the Registration of Sworn Translators, the original document must be presented before the sworn translation.
5. You receive your sworn translation, ready for use.

Take care with names and qualification titles

The spelling of the name must match the spelling in your passport or identity card. Qualification titles are rendered as accurately as possible, taking into account the official terminology and the education system of the issuing country.
